Microsoft To Buy Skype
Well, you have to hand it to Microsoft. After all eyes had turned to Google or Facebook as Skype’s potential buyer, MS swooped in and did the deal, just as The Wall Street Journal predicted last night. Normally, I don’t cover big tech deals. But this one is huge, and the opinions on whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing for Skype are more than just relevant to me as a journalist trying to get the story right. You see, and this is full disclosure, I use Skype almost daily from my perch here in Brussels. I use it to record my interviews for the radio show and for the podcast. I use it to stay in touch with family and friends around the world for far less money than it would cost me on landlines or mobiles. Apart from Skype’s recent Mac update (which was disastrous from a user point of view, in my opinion), and the occasional bit of spam from alleged Beautiful Russian Ladies, I’m fairly happy with my experience on Skype.
So, it was for my own benefit as much as yours that I’ve put together this round-up of news, views and analysis. I hope reading through it will help you understand what might be in store. Let me know if there are any views or articles I should add.
