This week:  It’s the week of the first anniversary of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. First we’ll hear what new research reveals about last year’s earthquake, and the possibility of future ones. Scientists find a link between corruption in countries and deaths during earthquakes. He’s also the guest in our latest Science Forum discussion. Then, the story of a man who collects the dead bodies of cholera victims. Also, an update on the cholera vaccine discussion. (Photo courtesy of Eric Calais).

Another Earthquake in Haiti? Geologists weren’t surprised by last year’s earthquake in Haiti. They had been studying a prominent fault line in Haiti, and had long anticipated an earthquake on that fault. They had even warned the Haitian government about the impending disaster. So, when the quake struck Haiti last January, geologists thought that it was on the particular fault line they’d been studying. But more recent research is revealing a different, and more troubling picture.

Corruption Kills During Earthquakes: Corruption kills during earthquakes. A new study shows 83 percent of all deaths during earthquakes in the last 30 years were in countries that were unusually corrupt. The World’s Lisa Mullins speaks with study author Roger Bilham. He is also taking listener questions in our latest Science Forum discussion.
Guest: Roger Bilham
Join our online conversation with Bilham. He’s taking questions till January 26th.

Dealing with Cholera Victims in Haiti: The cholera outbreak in Haiti has spread easily because of the poor sanitation following last year’s devastating earthquake. More than 3,200 people have died of disease since October. One man has the job of collecting the bodies of cholera victims.
